SMBC Pushes Into European CLO Arranging With Structurer Hire
SMBC is making a move into European CLO arranging with the hire of Risa Itoshima as a CLO structurer, according to sources.
Itoshima is leaving a role as executive director at HPS Investment Partners in New York to join the bank.
SMBC declined to comment. Itoshima did not respond to a request for comment.
The European CLO arranger base is growing. Standard Chartered made its debut in 2025 under the lead of Constantin Hulst, and HSBC has grown its presence in the market with a series of deals since 2024 after a 10-year pause.
Last year, SMBC made several senior hires from JPMorgan’s CLO syndicate for its U.S. CLO arranging business, including Christine Ferris, who now serves as SMBC’s head of securitized products.
