The Architecture of Alpha: How Octus Powers High-Speed Decisions with Snowflake

In the global credit market, the edge belongs to those who see what others miss. It’s the shining beacon of insight in a sea of data. The signal in the noise. What if you could systematically engineer that edge? What if you could grant your entire organization the power to access market-moving data not in days or hours, but in moments?

At Octus, we didn’t just ask these questions; we built the answer. As the world’s leading credit data provider, with a subscriber base that has increased more than 50% in the past five years, we faced a critical challenge: How to deliver analytics-ready datasets to a rapidly growing, global client base with near-real-time relevance and uncompromising security. The solution required more than just another pipeline; it demanded a new paradigm for data delivery.

This is the story of how we built it using Snowflake’s native data sharing and private listings — the backbone of our solution — and how we built the automation around it to create a powerful system that lived up to the responsibilities of carrying a market-leading position. In this piece, you’ll walk away with a better understanding about how Octus:

  • Orchestrates near-real-time replication from production databases
  • Isolates and transforms shareable datasets in Snowflake
  • Maps consumer access via configuration-as-code
  • Generates Snowflake share listings programmatically from declarative YAML manifests

Octus customers require fresh, structured access to key datasets. With nearly 40,000 subscribers and growing, our engineering team faced three challenges:

  1. From Manual Overhead to Market Agility: We needed to eliminate the manual friction that slows down data access, so our clients and internal teams can act on information instantly.
  2. A Single Source of Truth, Not a stack of API calls: To support critical modeling and reporting, we enabled direct, warehouse-native access, allowing users to query all relevant data in one place with minimal code. This approach reduces overhead and streamlines workflows for customers who need fast, reliable access to complete datasets.
  3. Support data residency and multi-cloud delivery, while ensuring customers only see what they are granted permission to.

Octus’ technical architecture is engineered for resilience and speed, built on four key pillars that work in concert to deliver a seamless, secure data experience:

  1. Near real-time data replication: To ensure data is exceptionally fresh, we use Airbyte to replicate our source application databases directly into Snowflake on a five-minute cadence.
  2. Intelligent orchestration: Each sync is triggered by Apache Airflow. This allows us to enable workflow-as-code and gives us observability that executes reliably every 10 minutes.
  3. Secure by design transform: Using SQL, we isolate each dataset into its own dedicated schema within a central database(Figure 1). This structure is fundamental to preparing the data for secure, granular sharing.
  4. Declarative access (permission) control: We manage all schema-level grants for each consumer using a powerful combination of YAML and Python. This turns access control into a fully automated and auditable process, eliminating manual errors and delays.

To manage access across dozens of customers and products, we structure everything around a central Snowflake database:

Each schema represents a product and we map consumers to listings (Figure 2).

The heart of our automation is a powerful Python application that translates declarative YAML manifests directly into Snowflake grants (Figure 3 and Figure 4).

Figure 3

Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) integration

This will allow us to trigger share updates from Git commits to the YAML manifest, deploying and managing data entitlements with the same speed and rigor as mission-critical software.

Figure 4

At the core of our platform is an Apache Airflow DAG that acts as a state reconciliation engine. It doesn’t just run tasks; it ensures our data-sharing environment perfectly mirrors our defined access rules at all times. Each Airflow DAG run performs the following modular tasks (Figure 5):

  1. Data synchronization: First, the DAG triggers Airbyte to replicate data into Snowflake.
  2. Configuration refresh: Next, the engine exports the latest consumer-to-dataset mappings into our declarative YAML file from Snowflake metadata.
  3. Intelligent reconciliation: The engine programmatically parses the YAML to generate the required Snowflake DDL (like “CREATE SHARE, GRANT USAGE, GRANT SELECT”). It then identifies any deltas, such as new consumers or revoked datasets, and applies these changes as atomic permission updates to Snowflake.
  4. This continuous loop guarantees that our data share listings and grants are always current and perfectly aligned with our intended state. The result is bulletproof governance. Consumers never get access to the wrong dataset, and we avoid “grant drift” over time.

Figure 5

We designed Octus’ fully secure system to leverage Snowflake’s native semantics instead of working around them. The result is a solution that allows consumers to see and experience the data — to use the data is if it were in their own systems — but without compromising the data or exposing it to security risks.

Here’s what we gained:

  • Zero manual grant management — all permissioning is inferred and enforced. This translates to unprecedented operational efficiency and allows us to onboard new clients and launch new data products at the speed of the market.
  • Scalability — whether we are adding a single trial user or a new institutional client, the process is the same: a simple, audited update to our configuration. We simply update the YAML and rerun the DAG.
  • Governance — every permission change is versioned, auditable, and transparent. This provides a clear, defensible trail for compliance and regulatory oversight..
  • Low latency — with data delivered in near-real-time (sub-five-minute syncs), clients move from reactive analysis to proactive decision-making, capturing opportunities that are invisible in slower data ecosystems..
  • And most importantly, this system lets us scale customer data access without scaling team effort.

The strength of our data governance and technical architecture gives us the foundation to move in the market with relentless speed and precision. This platform is not an endpoint; it’s a foundation for continuous innovation at Octus that benefits our subscribers and institutional clients. Our focus now turns to enhancing this advantage. Here’s what we’re already working on:

  • Data access observability: We are building Snowflake-native monitoring to create deep observability on listing usage and customer engagement. This powerful feedback loop will help us understand which datasets drive the most value, guiding our future product development and helping our clients succeed.

If you’re looking to move beyond APIs or dashboards and toward true self-service analytics, Octus’ integration of Snowflake, YAML and Python is a powerful foundation.

By tightly coupling Snowflake’s data sharing capabilities with Airflow orchestration and declarative configuration, we’ve moved beyond mere data pipelines and have engineered our infrastructure into a true scalable, near-real-time data delivery platform. This is more than just a technical achievement; it’s a new foundation for self-service analytics and data monetization.

Earlier, we asked what you could do with the power to see what others miss. Now, that power is here. The only question left is: What will you do with it?
