Bridging the Gap: Takeaways From Octus’ Chicago Private Credit Dinner

When middle-market private credit leaders gathered at Chicago’s Union League Club on July 30, one dynamic became immediately clear: Chicago’s mid-market lending community is tightly knit, highly active, and notably underserved by dedicated local events.

Beyond high-value networking, the evening surfaced sharp operational and macro shifts across the private debt landscape. Here is what dominated the conversation.

1. Middle Market Resilience vs. Large-Cap Defaults

While large-cap default rates continue to climb, middle-market fundamentals are proving far more stable. Discussion centered on Octus’s latest BDC analysis—specifically yield trends, redemption patterns, and Class S vs. Class I share dynamics. Lenders emphasized that granular origination tracking and yield benchmarks are becoming critical tools for pricing risk accurately. The data resonated strongly enough that attendees requested printed report packets to share directly with their own LP bases—a clear sign of where market focus sits right now.

2. Market Comps Are Powering Syndication

With middle-market platforms increasingly syndicating loans to outside co-investors, balance-sheet originators need hard proof to clear deals. Lenders acting as administrative agents on the majority of their facilities noted a growing reliance on objective, real-time market comparables. Showing how a new origination comps against current market clearing rates—and demonstrating historical portfolio outperformance—is now mandatory when bringing external capital into a transaction.

3. Workflow-Specific AI Over Enterprise Hype

Mid-market lenders are taking a strictly pragmatic approach to technology. Broad, enterprise-wide AI overhauls are taking a back seat to targeted, workflow-specific adoption. Platforms automating private credit document analysis and data extraction represent the most logical, immediate entry point for deal teams looking to strip manual friction out of underwriting.

Delivering granular BDC research, private credit coverage, and deal data is core to what we do at Octus. But bringing the leaders shaping the middle market into the same room to evaluate that data together is where the real value happens.
